Hebrews 5:1-11 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

A Forever High Priest

The previous chapter began to hit on an important understanding of Jesus being our High Priest. Chapter 5 of Hebrews gives a little more context to what is being said.

Drawn from Leviticus, the writer of Hebrews tells us how the priestly order was made for the sake of things pertaining to God. When a high priest was chosen, they were chosen for the sake of offering gifts and sacrifices for sins. Because of the fact that the high priest was also human and was subject to weakness, he could have compassion on those who would draw away from the Lord. When it would come to offering sacrifices for sin, he had to offer the sacrifice for himself as well as those in the congregation. This structure was appointed by God. And just as those high priests were chosen by God, so also was Jesus.

Psalm 2 and Psalm 110 are quoted to show how Jesus was chosen to fulfill this role for mankind. The role that was given to Him was fulfilled in full. He was faithful to what He was instructed in. He was obedient. He was perfect. He became the author of eternal salvation! And why could he be the author of an eternal salvation? Well He is the High Priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. His priesthood is forever and is not held back by the limitations of the Levitical priesthood. As such, the ministry that Jesus has performed is everlasting.

There will be a lot of context and important details for us to explore this week! As we begin to explore this section of Scripture, what observations are you making concerning this passage?
