Hebrews 9:1-15 | What's the connection?

Insufficient Sacrifice

This passage takes some time explaining the tabernacle and how the priests would serve in those capacities. More than likely, the intended audience would have some knowledge concerning all of these elements and the priestly duties performed. Nevertheless, each of these elements are no doubt emphasized for a purpose. The purpose is to get the audience to think of each of these elements in light of Christ, for each element testifies of yet another ministry Christ fulfills.

As the author of Hebrews delves deeper into the priestly duties, once again he does so with the intent of revealing how Jesus performs those better and to a greater degree. The audience would have had an understanding of the covering of sins that animals sacrifices could provide, but not a washing away of them. That came about by Jesus and by Jesus alone.

But what is the connection actually being made? This goes back to when the author talked about this being a better covenant built upon better promises. Now they are being directly compared. It is no longer anecdotal. It is no longer simply a call back to a time when Jeremiah testified of a new covenant. It is actually comparing them. One had a priest who had to offer sacrifices for himself. The other has a Priest who offered Himself as a spotless lamb. One could not touch the conscience and only sanctified to the purifying of the flesh. The other washes even our own consciences clean. These are now the better promises.

What connections are you seeing?
