Hebrews 12:1-2 | What's the connection?

A Great Cloud of Witnesses

This is one of those passages that serves as a bridge between sections. Be that as it may, it carries profound impact. If we are to look at the whole of Hebrews, it has been funneling the same exhortation and the same argument all throughout it. That exhortation is for the believer to hold on. The example was just given through chapter 11 of all the incredible men and women who walked faith out. This is our great cloud of witnesses. As a cloud is substantiated by the water it holds, so this cloud of witnesses is substantiated by the faith it possesses. By those who preceded us, we can imitate their behavior in laying things aside to run the race set before us.

As the argument continues of Jesus being better, we see Him as our prime examples. I most nearly view these two verses as being included in the hall of faith. As all these men and women substantiate this great cloud of witnesses, Jesus sits upon it. He is the prime example that we are to look to. He authors and finishes our faith. At no point does our faith deviate from that source. He endured the cross. He took in the suffering and was rewarded greatly. Contextually speaking, this is exactly what the writer of Hebrews wants us to realize. Our obedience may cost us greatly, but it will be followed by an incredible reward.
