Hebrews 9:1-15 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

Old Vs. New

The writer to the Hebrews takes time breaking down some of the differences between the old and the new covenant and what pertains to those.

The old covenant had an old tabernacle where ministry was taken place. He describes the different parts of it and explains that each one of those things bears significance, as indicated by the statement that they cannot speak in detail of it at that point. After giving a brief description of what exists in the tabernacle, the writer to the Hebrews explains the service of the priests and high priests in it. He explains that it bore limitation. The high priest would have to offer sacrifices for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance. All of these things were symbolic, the author claims, as the gifts and sacrifices offered could not wash his conscience.

Enter in Jesus. The author explains a major difference between Jesus and the high priest of the old. He enters into a heavenly tabernacle, not made with hands. He didn't enter in with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood. He draws a comparison that if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of a heifer could sanctify for the purifying of the flesh, how much more should the blood of Jesus prove effective? He offered Himself without spot. And so Jesus can do something that no other could do. Where there was limitation within the old to cleanse one's conscience, the blood of Jesus is sufficient to cleanse one's conscience from dead works to serve the living God. As such, He is the Mediator of the new covenant. By Him, those whoa re called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. It truly is a better covenant, established on better promises.
