Hebrews 8:1-6 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

The Big Idea

The writer to the Hebrews finally sums up what the point of what he is saying is. In the same vein, he also prepares the next section. The short of it is that we have a heavenly minister ministering in heaven to the Lord on High. He is a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle.

Addressing some of the priestly roles, it was necessary for priests to offer gifts and sacrifices. Jesus, in fulfilling His priestly duty also had to have something to offer. As we all know, He offered Himself, and was a sweet smelling aroma to the Lord. But as a measure of qualification, Jesus could not continue on earth and be a priest, as the priests would offer sacrifices according to the Law. Jesus supersedes that law.

The priests that are being referred to offer these sacrifices in serving the shadows of things to come. As Moses was instructed to set up the tabernacle, it was a shadow of what was to come. That was not the fulfillment. It was set up to demonstrate that the Lord would dwell among His people. The true tabernacle is a heavenly one. The push for the book of Hebrews is to then turn our eyes to the substance of the things instead of keeping our eyes on the shadow. And now Jesus ministers as a Mediator of a better covenant built upon better promises. This becomes amazing news to us, but that covenant we will discuss next week.
