Hebrews 10:26-39 | What's happening (and who's involved)?
A Healthy Reminder
We face yet another controversial passage in this week's reading. While it may be scary to consider some of these passages, I do not want the fear of what is in Scripture keep you from the beauty of what is written. We will cover the controversy as we go on through the week, but for today we will simply look at the text as written.
Continuing on his path of reminding the Hebrew people of the greatness of Christ, the writer of Hebrews addresses the fear-imparting alternative. If one who received the knowledge of the truth and continues in sin willfully, that sacrifice is no longer effective for that individual. Through Moses' account, we can see that a man that falls under the conviction of two to three witnesses is subject to death. That is a people who have received the command and rebelled against it. But how much worse is it to trample underfoot the Son of God? How much worse is it to consider His precious blood a common thing? This very thing insults the Spirit of Grace, and the Lord is faithful to bring forth justice to the unrepentant. It is in fact a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Having stated this, the writer encourages the reader to self-examine. They endured great persecution. And that is exactly the point. They endured the persecution. They became companions with those that endured the same fate. They had a people along with them. They also had compassion to the writer who states he was in chains. And so the writer continues the exhortation to hold fast their confession.
To set the scene fully, he finally reminds them what they are doing this for. Keeping their eyes on the prize, he shows them the promises they are after. Jesus is coming back. He will repay wickedness and reward righteousness. Those who are just (which would be the justified) must live by faith. Believing, they will endure. But those who draw back give no pleasure to God. The section concludes with a mighty verse that we would do well to heed.
39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.
