Hebrews 10:26-39 | What's the lesson for me today?

Reflect. Recover. Respond.

Often, the devotions I am writing testify deeply to me as I am writing them. Yesterday's devotion really hit me like a truck. As I have grown in my relationship with the Lord and endured through ministry, I have found that one of the enemy's greatest traps he lays for me is discouragement. Thoughts of insecurity can plague me. "Am I doing enough? Is any of this actually effective? Am I just doing bad at my job? How come I don't get that kind of response? Etc." While I am not facing such dire persecution like those of the Hebrews, I, like every pastor out there, face a consistent stream of comments and criticisms. Admittedly, that alone can cause me to lose heart. But then I look at what is encouraged.

You see, whatever season of discouragement I am going through now, I can assure you that it is far from the first time I have gone through it. As I look back, I can see how the Lord brought me through every single one of those seasons. Instantly, that creep of despair that was slowly entering in was washed out with eagerness and excitement at how the Lord was going to show up this time.

As I sat there reflecting, and I saw the recovery, I was moved to a Scripture I have shared many times over that I would love for us to sit on.

12 Not that I have already attained,  or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. 16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.
-Philippians 3:12-16

While there is a need to reflect, there is no need to dwell. In fact, there are many things in our past we ought to forget that we may press on. How much time is spent in our lives recalling the things of the past instead of pressing forward to the goal? If your whole windshield is a rear view mirror, you are going to have a hard time navigating the path ahead. You can reflect. You will recover. But then you must respond.

Wherever you may be in life, whatever experiences you may have stumbled in, as the Lord picks you up, stand firm and then move forward. Don't get caught in the trap of discouragement. Press forward for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Reflect. Recover. Respond.

What lesson are you taking away?
