Hebrews 10:26-39 | What am I going to do about it?

Kingdom Mindset

The ABIDE Young Adults group is currently going through the book of Matthew. As we have started to work our way through it, something that has caught my attention is the focus upon the Kingdom of God. This, of course, is not new news to me. But it is imposing a challenge to my mindset that complements what this week's devotion has challenged. Am I self-concerned or Kingdom-concerned?

Jesus walked this earth, not concerned for himself, but concerned for the Kingdom of God. His actions, whether it be in solitude or ministering among the multitudes, were Kingdom focused. Scripture instructs us to have the mind of Christ. Many Scriptures jump to mind for me to share, but one stands above the rest and it is this.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
-Colossians 3:1-4

You will see that I have bolded two words in the above passage. Seek and set. As we have discussed reflecting, recovering, and responding, I see that responding with a Kingdom mindset requires seeking and setting. We are to seek those things which are above. We are to set our minds on things above.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was sit with my grandma and go through those I Spy books. I spent so much time looking for the different objects hidden among the conglomerate mess of objects in similitude. It developed into a habit that matured into research and study. I love finding answers. While that may apply well to the study of Scripture, it also serves against me as I get stuck seeking out things of the past. Seeking those things which are above is a needed discipline for my mind. But it is when it comes to setting my mind on things above that a Kingdom mindset can really develop.

It feels as though at any given moment there are a dozen thoughts running through my mind. It has been a long time challenge for me to have my mind set on the Kingdom and that alone. Just as Paul determined to know nothing but Christ and Him crucified, I find a similar determination in me. Already many things have been cut from my life to provide the time and space to be devoted wholly to the Lord. But that being said, just because the space is there does not mean I am taking advantage of it.

A discipline of Jesus that occurs to me once again is that of solitude. Being alone with the Father is essential to the development and implementation of the Kingdom mindset. So my application returns me back to the place of communing with God in solitude and conforming my thoughts to His thoughts.

What application are you implementing?
