Hebrews 7 | What am I going to do about it?

Get Understanding

7Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding.
-Proverbs 4:7
As I continue to reflect upon how we are saved to the uttermost by the work of Jesus, I consider the context that this deep truth is brought up in. It is brought up in the context of deep biblical understanding. The deeper we go into the text, the more we can confirm these realities and grow into them. While the pursuit of faith is not an academic pursuit, reading, learning, and understanding can bring about a deeper form of realities we may already understand. You may not need Hebrews 7 to tell you that Jesus can save us to the uttermost and you may not need the full context of Melchizedek to get to that point, but when you have it, it reinforces it.

I have found in my journey that these truths that are continuously reinforced throughout Scripture become particularly grounding for my faith. If I only had one place in the entire canon that testified of the depth of my salvation, I may find myself arguing that it doesn't apply to my situation. But when I simply cannot escape the fact that the Lord saves as He does, it reinforces my faith every time I witness it. The deeper and more widespread those truths are the deeper that reality becomes confirmed.

So what do we do with that? Well we continue to learn and to grow. We continue to grow in knowledge. In all our getting, we get understanding. The question that stands out to me in our application is this. Are our lives structured in such a way that allows us to pursue growing in understanding? Do we study the word with the intent to know God? Are we pursuing knowledge for the sake of knowledge, or are we pursuing knowledge for the sake of knowing God?

I pray that we can be excited by the depth that is in Scripture and pursue the Lord in it. Consider it like a spouse who has been married to her husband for decades. Does she suddenly give up learning about him because she has had so much time? Or, as a good wife, does she continue to pursue her husband and learn her husband? All the best marriages I have bore witness to do this exact thing. Would we, in our relationship with the Lord, grow in our knowledge of Him that we would grow in our relationship with Him.

What application are you implementing today?
