John 6:22-59 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

The passage we are dealing with this week is basically a whole lot of watching people just not getting it. Jesus is followed across the sea and, from the surface level, it looks a lot like these people are simply interested in following Jesus. But Jesus discerns their hearts quickly. They were not interested in following Him. They were interested in what He could do for them. This causes Jesus to enter a bit of a discourse as to what they should pursue. The concern ought not to be about the cares and affairs of this life. Rather, they should be concerning with heavenly matters. But they still don't get it.

The conversation flows into discussion about manna - the bread that was given to Israel in the wilderness from Heaven. It was what gave Israel life and sustained them throughout their time preceding the Promised Land. Jesus testifies to this group that the Father sends an even greater bread. They ask for it, again not knowing what they are really asking for.

Jesus discloses some critical information. He is that bread that was sent. Should any come to Him, they will neither hunger nor thirst. He adds more clarity in recognizing this is a testimony of a spiritual reality. Whoever sees the Son and believes in Him will have everlasting life. Yet again, the people don't get it.

They begin murmuring amongst themselves concerning who Jesus is, expressing their doubts and unbeliefs about Him coming from Heaven. Jesus further challenges this.

48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”
-John 6:48-51

Believe it or not... the people didn't get it. They continued to argue with Him as He further explained that they must partake of Him in order to have eternal life. Spoiler alert: the people still didn't get it.
