John 5:17-47 | What's the lesson for me today?

There is a very strong call to action found in this passage, but you have to look for it a little bit.

24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
-John 5:24

In the center of Jesus' discourse, we have a clear instruction to follow that really captures the essence of what is being said. Believe. The whole passage is reasoning and evidence as to why the reader should believe. It is reasoning given to those who doubted and questioned Him so that they may believe. After all, the point of John's Gospel is to help belief. Jesus is drawing our attention to look upon the evidences and see that He really is who He says He is.

We know in the body of Christ that we are to have faith, and most of us really think that we do. Let me draw your attention to another passage of Scripture that I think helps us understand faith even better. Speaking of Abraham's faith, Paul writes to the Romans, "21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform." (Rom. 4:21) I believe that this is the best definition of faith that we have. Faith is being fully convinced. So are we really? Do we really believe? Or is there still doubt? Let us test the words of Jesus and truly know that He is who He says He is.

What lesson are you taking for yourself today?
