John 7:37-53 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

Jesus is continuing in Jerusalem at the Feast of Tabernacles. In this passage, it is now the final day of the feast and Jesus stands and announces prophetically something about Himself.

37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
-John 7:37-38

John emphasizes that Jesus was speaking of the giving of the Spirit.

As the crowds heard this, you see the same tale being told once again. The people were divided. Some insisted upon Jesus being a prophet, others the Messiah, and still others insisted that Jesus was none of these things. They challenged and argued with one another. Many sought to lay hands of Jesus, but none did. This led to a pretty severe conversation among the officers and the Pharisees. The Pharisees insisted that Jesus be taken but the officers are implied to believe Jesus may be more than just a normal man. Nevertheless, the Pharisees pressed all the more. Nicodemus, the same one from John 3, spoke wisdom that calmed this affair for the time being.

Ironically, the Pharisees make one final statement in an attempt to condemn Jesus as not being who He says He is.

52 They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”
-John 7:52

The irony found in this is that 2 Kings 14:25 tells us that Jonah came from Gath Hepher which is in Galilee. So they were simply wrong.

What observations are you making in this passage?
