Hebrews 12:12-17 | What's a lesson for the original audience?
A Holy Calling
A theme has emerged throughout this book multiple times, but because a focal point in chapter 12. That is the theme of holiness. As we covered last week's devotions and talked about the discipline that the Father brings to His sons, we discussed that the purpose of that was ultimately to yield righteousness. It is for our sake that the Lord disciplines us. It fosters that fruit of righteousness. Out of that, there are some practicals given as to how walking out holiness looks. This covered the base of holiness unto the Lord. The section we cover this week focuses on holiness amidst one another.
The conduct we express among one another shows the evidence of where we stand with the Lord. This is a major theme in 1 John as well. As righteousness grows within us, that righteousness also becomes fruit from us. The points of conduct that the writer of Hebrews touches on then is that we should ultimately be unified in the grace of God, rejecting immoral and profane behavior.
Contextually speaking, within the historical context, this charge causes a rejection of the ways of Gentiles. The fear of the day is that if the Christian does not heed to the Torah, then they will inevitably run in the way of the Gentiles. The behavior that is addressed is the behavior of Greeks. The lesson is quite simple. Walk in the grace of God; reject the ways of the world.
What lesson do you see for the original audience?
