Hebrews 9:16-28 | What's happening (and who's involved)?

The Necessity of Christ's Death

This week's passage focuses on a particular subject. Jesus' death was necessary. By way of looking at the law, the writer to the Hebrews emphasizes an important realization - Christ had to die and His blood had to be shed. He discusses how things were purified. Water, scarlet wool, and hyssop would commonly be used for purification. More specifically, when it would come to hyssop, they would dip the hyssop in the blood of bulls and goats and sprinkle the objects or the people with the blood to cleanse them. The point of this explanation comes in verse 22 where it says, "22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission." (Hebrews 9:22).

The emphatic point to follow is that all of those things were simply copies of things to come. If they were copies, then what was copied? We find a clear answer in Hebrews. It was a copy of the heavenly things. And now Jesus is not serving in the earthly capacity. In the cleansing of His own blood, He has entered into heaven where He appears in the presence of God for us. Unlike the earthly priests, He does not need to come continuously offering Himself as a sacrifice. For He has entered once and that work has been accomplished.

More good news comes about! This is not simply a testimony of what has already happened, but the consequences of it for us as believers today. And even more than that, the chapter finishes with a promise. Jesus is coming back. He is not coming back for the remission of sins, for that has been accomplished. He is coming back for the fullness of salvation for His people. What a day that will be...
