John 12:1-11 | What's a lesson for the original audience?

Given the counter cultural points in the account of Mary pouring the spikenard on the feet of Jesus and wiping His feet with her hair, that would have absolutely stood out in this account. The example taken from this account at large would be that of humility. We see the example of Mary's humility and submission before the Lord and it contrasted with Judas' criticism.

It was unfortunately common that the actions of women would be heavily criticized in this culture. No doubt, there would be many who would criticize Mary for what she had done and actually agreed with Judas. If they did not agree with Judas, many would likely still criticize Mary for the intimacy of the situation at large. But Jesus praises her for the action. He does not condemn it.

As priorly stated, the lesson that sits at the center here is the lesson of humility. It is worth the money and the time to sit before Jesus. I even consider this passage from Psalm 2.

    10      Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
    Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
    11      Serve the LORD with fear,
    And rejoice with trembling.
    12      Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
    And you perish in the way,
    When His wrath is kindled but a little.
    Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.
-Psalm 2:10-12

The lesson is to draw near in humility now while you can. The time is coming when you may no longer have such an opportunity.

What lesson are you seeing?
