John 8:12-59 | What is a lesson for the original audience?

The audience would have seen these two sides being juxtaposed against one another and would find themselves at the helm of choice. Where one side is presented as the truth, the other side is presented as a lie. And what determines what each one of those are? According to Jesus, it is their parentage. Genealogy and lineage was incredibly important to the people of Israel. But Jesus is not talking about some physical lineage. He is speaking spiritually.

The audience of the day would have to find themselves questioning where they come from. Are they like the Pharisees and also of their father the devil? Or will they rejoice over the coming Son as the Father would have it? If they belong to the Father who is God, then they too are born of the truth and the Son sets them free. Yet, if they are born of the devil, who is the father of lies, then they too are a lie and remain in bondage.

The choice before them is simple, and it is the choice before all of us. Will we submit to and believe upon Jesus?

What lesson are you seeing?
