John 8:1-11 | What's a lesson for the original audience?

Considering that this narrative was likely passed by way of oral tradition, we can examine it by way of the themes found in the text. The theme that most would recognize is the fact that Jesus is the One who has the authority to pass judgment. Given this particular opportunity, not only does He forgive and let her go free, she instructs her to go and sin no more.

This is a theme we see persist throughout Scripture. Jesus does not forgive and then leave His people. He forgives and redeems His people. Jesus, in His wisdom, not only deterred those trying to lay a trap for Him, but He does so in a way that preserves His character, His integrity, and His Lordship. All of these themes would likely be recognized by the original audience.

Jesus' judgment is perfect! He gave opportunity to this woman for her life to be turned around and for her to be set free from that which evidently plagued her.

What lessons do you see?
