John 6:22-59 | What is a lesson for the original audience?
Admittedly, there are many lessons to pull from in this section, but I want to zero in on a specific one. That is the main point that Jesus is making. He is instructing the people to see things from a different lens. They were looking at everything from such a physical standpoint that they could not begin to fathom what Jesus was saying. In fact, this very issue was keeping Nicodemus from understanding what Jesus was saying in John 3.
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
-John 3:4
Because of asking the wrong questions and looking the wrong direction, they missed the very important lesson that Jesus was getting at. They needed to partake of Him in order to have eternal life. They would not ascertain it on their own accord. No amount of works nor prayers would accomplish what they are setting out for. It is only through Christ that they will have eternal life. But if they continue looking through the lens they are looking through, they will continue to miss it.
