John 6:15-21 | What's the connection?

History is loaded with all manner of figures who have supposedly walked upon water. For just about all of them, the claims surround evidence of them being some deity figure. It is show their power or control. The issue is for nearly all of them, the accounts are really messy, unorganized and written centuries after the event may have occurred. Such is not the case for Jesus.

When we look at this passage contextually, we may assume a connection is there demonstrating how Jesus is greater than Moses yet again. And this may very well be the case! Moses led the people through the waters while Jesus stands over them. Seeing the way in which John continuously brings up how Jesus outshines Moses, it would not be surprising if this was there to some regard. However, the evidence is limited to suggest that may actually be the case.

One reality that does stand out throughout Scripture that this account may very well be in reference to is that God is above the waters. He stands above the chaos of the world and has dominion over it.

8He alone spreads out the heavens,
And treads on the waves of the sea;
-Job 9:8

This reinforces John's overarching theme of highlighting the divinity of Jesus. It is He who has authority over the waves and the waters.

What connections are you making?
