John 6:1-14 | What is a lesson for the original audeince?

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
-Hebrews 1:1-4

A lesson we see emerging throughout the New Testament is this reality that Jesus is truly better than what was before. Now, I did a no-no here as I broke up the text from so much of the surrounding context. The reader of the time would not simply look at this text in isolation the way that we are now. Rather, they would look at it in the whole of the context and see how Jesus is better in this instance.

The people sat down and ate and were satisfied. The ultimate lesson found in this is that Jesus truly does satisfy, and what He gives is without limitation. Just as when the manna fell in the wilderness, everyone ate and was satisfied with what He had. It showed Israel that the Lord was sufficient for their every need and none would lack. The lesson is the same concerning Christ. The difference that is found in the context is that the concern for Jesus was more about this spiritual food. If the people partook of Him, they would be satisfied spiritually.

What lesson do you see for the original audience?
