John 6:1-14 | What's the connection?

I made a very specific note about something that was mentioned in this section in yesterdays devotion. I noted that it was highlighted how Jesus went up on top of a mountain and that the time was drawing to the Passover. We would do well to remember that Scripture does not simply add filler. It is not trying to "set the stage" or anything of the sort. There is intention to the mention of these things. As we get further into chapter 6, we see John's intent. There is a very clear distinction made between this event and the manna that was given in the wilderness.

The Passover was a reminder of the Exodus from Egypt and the mountain would be a reminder to the people of Israel of Moses' ascent to meet with the Lord. And what came in that time? Manna. Manna was given to the multitudes. It was multiplied in such a way that everyone ate and was satisfied. They were filled. Just as those sat before Jesus. We even see a deep allusion to this in the way that the disciples went back out and gathered the baskets. Consider what is written concerning the Law of Moses in regard to the manna.

19 And Moses said, “Let no one leave any of it till morning.” 20 Notwithstanding they did not heed Moses. But some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.
-Exodus 16:19-20

And what did Jesus tell of the disciples when He instructed them to gather these baskets?

“Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.”
-John 6:12b

It is treated in the same regard as the manna was. Jesus will further this argument concerning the manna narrative as we dive deeper into chapter 6. Nevertheless, a major conclusion we have in regard to Jesus' feeding of the 5,000 is that it is a very clear narrative that ties back to the manna in the wilderness.

What connections are you making?
