Proverbs 31:19
19She stretches out her hands to the distaff,
And her hand holds the spindle.
-Proverbs 31:19
As we have gone through Proverbs 31, we have seen many traits throughout that can be either masculine or feminine. The act of using the distaff and the spindle is all pieces that help make threads that will be woven into garments. This appears to be a much more feminine trait, and historically it would be considered to be so. So what has this to do with the believer today? If you do a study on garments throughout Scripture, you will find a trend that focuses upon the garments of salvation. It is what we are currently clothed in. It is the provision of the Lord. In the Garden of Eden, after the fall, the Lord made garments for Adam and Eve, designed to cover their shame. In the face of sin, Moses and Aaron would tear their garments as a proclamation of the revelation of shame that is exposed. As believers, our shame was covered by the blood of Jesus and in the New Heavens and New Earth, we will be further clothed.
But you may ask, what does this have to do with the Church? Jesus is the One who offers those garments. This is true, but the vessel by which He carries this message is His church. Consider what is written in 2 Corinthians 5,
18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
-2 Corinthians 5:18-19
That same garment that was given to us, we are now to bring to others. As those who are clothed, we stretch our hands to the distaff and hold our hand to the spindle that we may carry this word of reconciliation to those around us. Do not think that salvation is only purchased for you. And do not believe that it is only between others and the Lord as to whether they are saved. We too are called to plant seeds and water. So let us sow in wisdom and in love the message of Christ.
And her hand holds the spindle.
